Taktsang is the most famous piece of architecture in Bhutan and one of the most sacred nyes in the Buddhist world. It is also known as 'Tiger's Nest' because Legend says that this is the location where in 747 Guru Rimpoche (Padmasambhava) landed on the back of a flying tiger in the 8th century, bringing Buddhism to Bhutan from Tibet. He then meditated in a cave here for three months where a monastery was later built. On April 19, 1998, the main lhakhangs of Taktshang were burned to the ground in a fire. The spiritual essence of the nye is believed to be inviolable and the Pelphug (sacred cave where Guru Rinpoche meditated in the 8th century) was undisturbed by the fire. |
